The United States Supreme Court has decided the second amendment to their constitution does indeed give every American the right to possess firearms. This is a disappointment to many who hoped the court would interpret this provision in the context of its origin, namely: the post revolutionary period some 250 years ago when citizens could reasonably¬†hope to resist the tyranny of illegitimate government by use of force. In the modern context of sophisticated weaponry it is difficult to see how the broad right to bear arms can accomplish¬†anything other than maintain America’s status as the developed nation with the highest violent crime rate as well as the highest incarceration rate
