Reading of the sad case of the apparently exemplary father who is behind bars pending a determination of the charges he will face for striking his daughter who subsequently died it is worth noting that to be guilty of manslaughter one needn’t intend to cause death or even serious injury. Manslaughter is defined as causing death by an unlawful act which a reasonable person would foresee causing more than minimal injury. Thus, most acts which normally result in a charge of assault become manslaughter due entirely to bad luck resulting in death. For example, one punch causing the recipient to fall becomes a manslaughter if the victim strikes their head and dies as a result.
